PhillyCAM: Block by Block/Around the Block

Block by Block and Around the Block are community radio news programs produced by PhillyCAM’s Community Radio News Fellows and program graduates on WPPM-LP 106.5 FM, Philadelphia.

I was a Fellow for the Spring 2024 Season of Block by Block, and a founding member of the Around the Block graduate program. Here are a few of the stories I wrote, edited, and produced for the show, which focus on the LGBTQ+ Community.

Interview with Jasper Liem, Executive Director of Attic Youth Center

Val’s Lesbian Bar: Aired April 17th, 2024

Introduction: There are less than 35 operating lesbian bars in the United States today, according to the Lesbian Bar Project. These spaces are targeted toward queer women, nonbinary, and trans people who often feel marginalized in other nightlife spaces. Two Philadelphians are looking to add one more bar to the list by opening a new lesbian bar in Philadelphia. Block by Block reporter Meesh Cosares brings us this story on the grassroots campaign to make the dreams of a whole community a reality.

South Street Art Mart: Aired June 12th, 2024

Introduction: South Street Art Mart is a small, colorful shop that’s actually located on 4th Street, just a few doors north of South. Inside, you can find work from more than 100 local artists. Block by Block reporter Meesh Cosares sat down with the owners and operators of South Street Art Mart to discuss what it’s like to run a Covid-conscious small business in 2024.
